When it comes to measuring energy, not all meters are created equal. If you’ve shopped around for a digital electric meter, you’ve probably seen the term “MID-approved” alongside standard kWh meters. But what exactly does that mean, and does it matter for your setup? In this blog, we will be discussing the key differences to bear in mind when purchasing an energy meter

What does MID-approved mean?

MID stands for Measuring Instruments Directive, a European standard that sets strict rules for the accuracy and reliability of measuring devices such as electricity meters. In the UK, these rules are mirrored by the Measuring Instruments Regulations 2016.

An MID-approved kWh meter has been independently tested and certified to meet these requirements. It carries either a CE mark (for EU) or a UKCA mark (for UK) to prove compliance. This makes the meter legally valid for billing, sub-metering, and any situation where energy costs are being charged to a third party.

Standard kWh meters explained

A standard kWh energy meter measures electricity use just like an MID-approved model, but it hasn’t gone through the same certification process. These meters are often cheaper, and they work well if you simply want to track energy consumption internally. For example, monitoring equipment performance, keeping an eye on usage trends, or measuring the output of a renewable energy system.

When do you need MID approval?

The key question is whether the readings will be used for financial transactions. If you are a landlord, facilities manager, or business charging tenants, customers, or staff for electricity use, then an MID/UKCA-approved meter is required by law. Energy suppliers also use certified meters for schemes like the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), which pays businesses and households for exporting renewable electricity back to the grid.

If, however, you are simply monitoring your own energy usage – for example, checking equipment performance, tracking efficiency, or measuring the output of a solar system for internal records – a standard (non-MID) meter is perfectly suitable.

Other considerations

Accuracy: MID-approved meters are tested for precision. That extra reliability can be useful even if you don’t need it for billing.

Cost: Standard meters are usually less expensive, but the savings may not outweigh compliance needs.

Applications: From single phase electric meters in small properties to 3 phase electric meters in commercial or industrial settings, both MID-approved and standard meters are available in a wide range of options.
